Choosing fabrics can feel daunting, especially when you’re thinking about mixing more than one. Get it right, and your sofa looks at home straight away. Get it wrong, and something always feels a little off. Our team spend their days putting fabric combinations together for our showrooms, so here are the five simple rules they rely on:
1. Start with your anchor
Every scheme needs a starting point. It might be a deep velvet, a soft plain or a patterned weave. Once you have chosen your anchor fabric, the rest falls into place more easily.

2. Add in accents
Cushions, footstools or an occasional chair are the perfect places for your supporting fabrics. Stripes, checks or bolder colours can step in here and add personality without taking over.
3. Let texture do the work
A mix of smooth and tactile fabrics makes a room feel inviting. Linen with velvet, wool with cotton, or boucle with leather. Texture brings warmth just as much as colour does.
4. Find a common thread
The most successful combinations always have something that ties them together. It might be a shade that repeats or a detail that quietly echoes elsewhere. It does not need to shout, just enough to bring harmony.
5. Ask for advice
Sometimes it takes a second pair of eyes to make it click. Our team love helping people piece together fabrics, and often it is about finding that one choice that makes everything else work.
