Spring Cleaning: Essential Tips to Care for Your Fabric Sofa

As the flowers bloom and the days get longer, spring marks the perfect time for a fresh start – and that includes giving your fabric sofa the care and attention it deserves. After enduring the wear and tear of winter, your sofa may be in need of some TLC to revive its beauty and extend its lifespan. Here are some essential tips to help you care for your fabric sofa this spring:

Avoid Sunlight and Direct Heat

Protect the fabric of your sofa or chair by positioning it away from direct sunlight to avoid the deterioration and fading of the fabric. Drawing the blinds or curtains when appropriate will also help. Be careful of open fires and radiators.

Get Comfortable

Try not to sit on the edge of the seat cushion as this can cause premature wearing. Avoid sitting on the arms of your sofa or chair as they were not designed to carry an adult’s body weight. Only use them to rest your arms or lay your head down.

Vacuum Regularly

A build-up of dirt and dust will rapidly increase the wearing down of the fabric and contribute to the colour fading. To avoid this, regularly clean your sofa or chair by using the soft-brush-upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

Legs and Feet

Lift don’t drag! If you need to move your sofa don’t drag it across the floor. Lift it to protect your flooring or carpet and to protect the legs and castors. We recommend using felt pads and castor cups under the legs and feet to avoid damage to your floor. Before and after moving your sofa, always check the legs are correctly in position. Don’t forget to check the legs of your sofa or chair regularly to make sure they haven’t spun out of place. You may be required to tighten these firmly by hand every now and then.

Spot-Clean Spills Immediately

Accidents happen, but it’s essential to address spills promptly to prevent stains from setting into the fabric. Blot the spill with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible, then gently clean the area with a mild detergent or upholstery cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing vigorously, as this can damage the fabric fibers. Check out last weeks article on Easy To Clean Sofas – For Busy Homes.

Cushion Care

Turn and rotate your seat and back cushions regularly. Turning and rotating the seat and back cushions of your sofa every week can double their life span by ensuring they wear evenly. Doing this allows the foam and fibre in the cushions to recover. Your sofa will improve over time, making it more durable and comfortable.By ‘plumping up’ loose cushions and feather quilted seat cushions regularly, you will help maintain their shape and look.

Velvets & Chenilles

Some of these beautiful fabrics can be very delicate. Most velvets sold in Finline have a polyester blend making them more durable. Try using a velvet-brush to remove any marks over time. It is important to remember that marking, crushing, or flattening of the pile is a natural characteristic of the material, rather than a flaw and should be expected over time.

Be Prepared

We recommend buying 2 – 3 meters extra fabric at the time of ordering, in case of an emergency, you will always have it on hand for us to assist with a repair/replacement part.

Professional Cleaning

We highly recommend in-situ professional upholstery cleaning every 2-3 years to keep your sofa or chair in peak condition. Contact a professional upholstery cleaning company for emergency stain removal. For in-between professional cleanings, consider using a fabric brush or handheld steam cleaner to freshen up your sofa. Brushing the fabric gently helps lift surface dirt and debris, while steam cleaning can effectively sanitise and deodorise the upholstery without the need for harsh chemicals.
